Roland Hayes (June 3, 1887 – January 1, 1977) was an American lyric tenor and composer. Critics lauded his abilities and linguistic skills demonstrated with songs in French, German and Italian. Earlier African-American concert artists were not recorded because in their day recording companies were only interested in a vaudeville type of singer. Verna Golden was born in River Falls, WI. In 1904 her husband, Carlyle Scott, received an appointment to teach music at the University of Minnesota. In 1919, Verna Scott was appointed director of the University Concert Course, which was later renamed the Artist's Series.
